That is what osteology needs: you pick up a femur, find the head, neck and trochanters, decide which side it is from, then fit it against the hip bone at the joint. Spotters and vivas are done the same way, with a single bone in your hand. An articulated skeleton on a stand is useful for showing how the body fits together, but you cannot take a bone off it to study.
